Word for the day “The mystery of marriage.”
Matthew 19:3 (KJV) The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who [a]made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate.”
The mystery of marriage and the purposes of God.
In today’s empowerment, Jesus teaches about the sanctity and permanence of marriage. Now we begin to see why the love of a husband and wife is a symbolic expression and manifestation of God’s love. The Father and the Son—while remaining distinct—give themselves unreservedly to each other, and this mutual giving is the working of the Holy Spirit. It is my premise in today’s world whether in the church or not that those planning for marriage and those already married should be considered very deeply what’s conveyed in this mystery called marriage (Ephesians 5:31-33).
So, when two people come together in love and form one flesh, they mimic the love between the Father and the Son. And when their love gives rise to a child, this emulates supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit. This is the profundity of the counsel of God (Hebrews 6:17). This expression of the Father, mother, and children is an expression of the divine Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Marriage is an expression and manifestation of the Lord’s Church.
And this is why Jesus speaks so passionately about marriage, and why his Church, at its best, has imitated him throughout the ages of history. It is because marriage is such a profound and divine sign that the Church has sought to preserve it at all cost. Because marriage is of God and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). Clearly, the Church is often in a compromised situation in our world today because of its stance on holiness, marriage, morality, rules and etc. In fact, many have decided that the church with all of its rules and standards must be done away with once and for all.
Many believe that people should decide what’s best for themselves and not the ideologies of the Church. I’ve decided to stay on the side of the Church with its imperfections and standards for living. After all, as noted today if marriage and the Church are expressions and manifestations of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. I’ll take my chances with God’s design for my life.
Point to ponder
The world we live in has its laws, restrictions, and mandates for the things it wants to preserve. I believe the Church has the same mandate to preserve the things it values and marriage is one of those things.
